Study tips

Bad days: how to keep studying with no motivation

On bad days motivation often fails, so rely on discipline and reverse psychology. Reduce friction by lowering the bar: set minimum goals, use short-interval study techniques and accept that making a little progress is far better than doing nothing. If you feel able to continue after that time, carry on; if not, rest will be more effective because at least you tried. You can do some light reading rather than active study or highlighting, skimming your notes to stay in touch with the subject without feeling pressure. You can also choose the easiest task, something mechanical or a topic you already know and find comfortable. The important thing is to add one small achievement.

Sometimes taking micro-breaks and moving about — stretching your legs, walking around the house or going out to clear your mind — reduces the feeling of overwhelm.

So I advise you to prioritise self-care and, if nothing is going in, rest. Sometimes the best decision is to switch off, sleep well and start again the next day with a clear mind.
