Why you feel stuck (and what to do)

Feeling that you are not progressing is often a warning signal from your mind. It often happens when you have unrealistic expectations, experience mental overload, or constantly compare yourself with others. Identifying the root of this stagnation is the first step to overcoming it. It is often a sign that you need to redesign your habits and step outside your comfort zone.

It generally happens because you move from learning basic concepts, where everything is new, to dealing with real use of the language, which can cause an overload of information or the pursuit of vague goals.

Possible causes include a lack of specific goals; studying in a general way, with isolated vocabulary or grammar, without a clear functional aim (for example, holding a ten-minute conversation without translating or understanding a podcast); trying to build sentences by translating word for word instead of processing natural patterns; or consuming content that is too easy.

What to do to improve

Start using complete phrases instead of memorising isolated words. Learn functional chunks of language so your brain can automate them more quickly, and raise the challenge by looking for content that makes you pay attention rather than relying only on memory. Read books, watch series or listen to native speakers to immerse your brain in the language. And above all, relax and enjoy it! Learning is like a hike: it has ups and downs, rests, and a destination that sometimes seems to move further away, but with consistency and perseverance you will get there!
